When Most people think a full moon they think of others going a little “lunar”
Allie from What’SUP Cairns, looks forward to full moons as it’s when Allie and a committed group of friends get together on their stand up paddleboards (SUP) and paddle around Lake Tinaroo at night.
Stand Up Paddleboarding is one the world’s fastest-growing sports and Allie says, it saved her life “My daughter committed suicide in 2014 and of a low point in my life I decided to buy the stand-up paddleboarding business. It saved me and the night time paddles are something I always look forward too.
Allie thought getting people together to go for a paddle at night would be a great form of therapy. “We get so many people who just want to be with other like-minded individuals, it doesn’t matter if you’re suffering from depression or not, being out on the lake at night is something special”
Allie gets around 40 people joining her at Lake Tinaroo every full moon “it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an expert, or if you want to bring your own kayak or paddleboard. Everybody is welcome, it’s a way of bringing the Tablelands together “
After the paddle there’s a social aspect to the night ‘We have a fire, music, some red wine and we ask everybody to please bring a plate. You need to bring your own camping equipment if you plan on staying the night.”
The next full moon paddle is on this Saturday night (Jan 8) Cost is $60 and includes stand-up paddleboard, glow sticks, tutoring and a guide. For more information https://www.whatsupcairns.com.au/ or call 0435 836 282
