Multicultural Festival less than a month away

The countdown is on for the 2019 Mareeba Multicultural Festival.

THE Mareeba Multicultural Festival is one of the most highly-anticipated events on the region’s calendar every year, and with it now being less than a month away, preparations are now well and truly in full swing.

The festival is a chance for community members to get together and celebrate the wonderful diversity that exists within the region all while promoting cultural understanding and mutual respect.

That common ground is highlighted at the festival through music and food, with hundreds of performers from approximately 20 different ethnic groups and 15 religious faiths, to go along with more than 20 stalls made up of a variety of cuisines.

First-time Mareeba Multicultural Festival President Jennifer Murat, who took over the role from long-time President Giuliano Cordenos, said preparations for this year’s event have been going smoothly.

“The organisation of the festival has been going really well,” she said.

“With it now being just a month away we are finalising bits and pieces to ensure everything is in place for August 31.

“It’s been a lot of work for myself personally given it’s my first year as President, however I have really enjoyed it and the committee has been extremely helpful and hands on right throughout the planning process.”

Ms Murat said she has received fantastic feedback from members in the community and that there’s a real buzz starting to build around town.

“There are plenty of people who are really excited – there are a few stall holders who have come back to us who haven’t participated in a couple of years which is a great sign,” she said.

“So we’re confident as a committee that there will be a strong crowd on hand in 2019.”

Ms Murat said the most significant change to the Mareeba Multicultural Festival this year is that there are six major prizes.

“People can buy a ticket into the raffle which will be drawn on the day of the festival,” she said.

For those interested in attending, the Mareeba Multicultural Festival will take place on Saturday August 31 from 9:30am – 5pm and is free of charge.

Bookings for stall holders are still available, however they are encouraged to express their interest as soon as possible as the program is very close to being finalised.
